Confirmation

Tonya's new Curl Chemist article on nc.com has confirmed why my hair does not like most oils. Not only does it go more in depth, but apparently porosity can have a big effect on using oils in our hair - nice to know! It's also cool because we learned about lipids and the structure of saturated/unsaturated fats a couple weeks ago in my biology class (and today, we learned about parasitic round worms in apple cider vinegar - oh joy!).

On Sunday, I did a DT with coconut oil, then washed as normal. I didn't want to throw any protein into the mix for fear of the coconut oil making the effects more intense. Because I am super paranoid like that. My tangles were a little better.

I went through my stash and discovered a whole host of protein products I had forgottten about! So now I won't have to dig up the dreaded LVPNG to get my small shot of protein.

Not much else going on in my hair life. I'm hoping to do some product testing this weekend with the untouched samples I got two months ago.

thanks for posting this! i hadn't seen it yet, and i am definitely in the "my hair hates oils" camp. i am not sure if i've seen what your hair texture is (fine or medium, i'd guess from your pix), but i'm hoping you'll continue to post about your porous hair and it's reactions to TLC. my hair is either porous or really vulnerable to getting stuff caught in the cuticles like that article was talking about. i find myself washing it every other day because it gets dry and not because my scalp needs to be cleaned again. if the regular DTs with non-oil-based conditioners work, make sure to let us know! :)

I will! My hair is actually pretty coarse (weird, because I agree that it totally looks fine in my pics!), which doesn't help with dryness.

My hair is definitely softer since my DT on Sunday. What products are you using?

Coconut oil is the only one my hair seems to like. I think because it's different than the other oils - isn't it the one of, if not the, only ones that can be absorbed? Anyway, it does not cause any of the problems that other oils cause and my hair stays moisturized when I use it every week. I picked some up a few months ago on the advice of Del, who helped me figure out I didn't like oils in the first place. She's amazing!

I tend to shy away from anything with a lot of oils in it--after I noticed they made me tangle and left my hair feeling coated and dry and in need of a shampoo, I just avoided them altogether. As for conditioners, I live the GVP and Walgreen versions of biolage hydrating conditioning balm. have also liked Aquelle Healing (at Sally's) and am planning to try Tigi Moisture Maniac at some point which from the ingredients looks like something my hair would like. stylers...half the time I skip, but my go-tos are HETT mousse and LA looks gel. and my fine hair loves protien treatments, so i use nexxus every 10 days to 2 weeks.

and if that's not TMI i don't know what is, lol. but what do we curlies come to such sites for, if not that?

i may get brave and try coconut oil. it does seem to be one that a lot of people have good responses to. worst case i can just shampoo it out. :)

Oh that article was great! It definitely confirmed my suspicions about High Porosity and Oils not playing well. I have to really study that table though! I want to find more oils that behave like Coconut does, awesome stuff glad you gave that a try! I like to use coconut oil at night and then wash it out the next day. Whenever I've tried to do it on the same day I don't get as good results for some reason. oh and Yes I'm amazing LOL!! Hey my advice works because our hair is similar. ;)

Oop, you already answered my question from the other post - should have read bottom to top. Lol, not TMI, just the basics for us!

That's weird that you're having those symptoms. GVP is pretty hydrating for me. The only time it hasn't been, was when I used other conditioners with oils and didn't use a sulfate to get them out.

Coconut oil is awesome! It's not like other oils at all and it always leaves hair very soft. Which reminds me, it's DT day!
